Tread Plate Options

Choose the perfect finishing touch for your spiral staircase with a stylish and functional tread plate. A wooden one is ideal for indoors, lending an air of sophistication, while metal can bring an industrial edge – great for outdoors. Tread plates are attached directly to the centre column, so there are no unsightly hubs, bolts or nuts.

There are three different types of tread plates available:

Vastrap or Checkered Plate.

The vastrap tread plate offers excellent slip resistance and is ideal for indoor or outdoor use.

Meranti wood.

The meranti wood option is beautiful and adds a touch of elegance to any space.

The Direction of Spiral Stairs

When approaching a spiral staircase, the direction of your ascent depends on what side you reach out to grasp the handrail. For example, if it’s your left hand that grabs onto the handrail first then you’ll need a Left-Hand Up configuration; but switch over and use your right arm instead and suddenly Right-Hand Up is required!

Whether you choose Right-Hand Up or Left-Hand Up makes no difference in the price. Both options the spindles are centred against the pole while facing forward towards the next tread.

Floor to Height Measurement

The finished floor-to-floor height is the essential foundation for building a custom spiral staircase. This critical measurement determines how many stairs, or treads, are needed and the rotation of your stairway. Take the first step – give us a call and we will gladly do these calculations for you.

Size of Finished Well Opening

The diameter of your finished well opening must always be at least 5 centimetres wider than the broadest step of your staircase. This allows for the hardware to be installed, including mouldings or other finishing materials applied to the final staircase installed.

What is a Square Well Opening?

The square hole cut in the ceiling that provides access to the next level is called the well opening. If your staircase leads up to a balcony or deck, you don’t have to worry about a well opening, because there is no “well”.

Indoor vs Outdoor Spiral Staircases

Access to another level in your home or a deck can be built either inside or outside your home. If you install your spiral stairs outdoors, stick with galvanised or aluminium powder-coated steel. Galvanised steel will last for years and years and require very little maintenance.

Powder-coated aluminium stairs are also a great outdoor alternative and you can choose from different colours. This is great if you want your spiral stairs to match your home or wall colours.

Tread plates are essential for avoiding slips and fall; the ideal option is a metal checkered tread plate which will not be affected by any weather. If that’s not to your taste, you could instead opt for a box-type tread plate with tiles – just ensure they don’t become too slippery!
